Drive to Detroit: The Rig

With the #DrivetoDetroit just over a week away, we are looking at a grueling 760+ mile one-day road trip. As with any road trip, it is not only important where you are going, but what you are taking there.

With winter weather always looming, a deadline to make, and the desire to spend the 11+hours in something exciting, there was only one vehicle we could choose.

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel.

With a style that is distinctly Porsche, the Cayenne Diesel will provide all the space and comfort we will need on our journey to The Motor City.

Speaking of motors, the Cayenne Diesel provides a pretty impressive one. The 3.0l 6 Cylinder diesel engine provides 240 horsepower, which is enough to push the vehicle to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds. While that may be plenty of power, the real figure that stands out is the road-buckling 406 lb-ft. of torque that it generates, which will provide us with enough power to tow our houses with us, if we decided it was necessary.Power and torque aside, there is one statistic that is most important on this trip: MPG. As we attempt to make the entire trip from KC to Detroit on just a single tank of Diesel fuel. This is where the Cayenne’s amazing 29 MPG highway number will come into play:

Assuming we can average 27mpg for the entire 26.4 gallon tank, we should have an estimated range of 712 miles. This is unfortunately less than the estimated 763 miles between here and the Cobo Center in downtown, Detroit. Thus we will need to do everything in our power to average 29 mpg for the whole trip, including packing light, infrequent stops, and ease on the throttle.

We suppose that if we have to spend 11 straight hours in a car that, it should be in something as luxurious and full of technology as the Cayenne’s interior. Featuring heated & powered leather seats, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports for power, Satellite Radio, and Navigation, we should have plenty of amenities to keep us plugged in and relaxed on our journey.
